The reformer is arguably the most popular piece of Pilates equipment. It has a moving platform (called a carriage) attached to springs of varying resistance. Springs can be added for more weight – which can make the exercise easier or sometimes more difficult! There are also ropes/straps attached, used for arm and leg work. The reformer can be an intense and complicated machine, which is why it isn’t found in gyms, however it is also a great way to introduce the body to Pilates. If you start with mat classes you only have your body weight to work with. With the reformer, you can work your way up slowly. This is a great apparatus for lengthening, strengthening, and getting a dose of all that Pilates has to offer!
